41) In 1949 the Soviet Union had succeeded in creating and detonating their first atomic bomb. Truman ordered the development of the Hydrogen bomb in the hopes of checking the growing communist power. In 1953, not too long after Amercia had achieved its first, the Soviet Union exploded their first H-bomb.

42) In 1947 the Truman administration launched a massive loyalty program, in response to the growing fear of Soviet spies. This program gave rise to the Loyalty Review board, which decided whether or not individuals or organizations were red and disbanded or fired them.

43) Increasingly, loyalty oaths were expected of employees and, in particular, of teachers.

44) In Dennis vs. United States (1951), the Supreme Court upheld the conviction that 11 communists had advocated the overthrow of the American government by force.
